La Digue Veuve new champions-Football: Women’s league |09 September 2010
They went into the match at the Baie Ste Anne playing field on Praslin needing a win to secure glory. A draw or loss would have jeopardised their chances, leaving Lioness with a good chance of claiming the trophy.
The match was played in sunny conditions, and in the 23rd minute a free kick by Vesna Cesar of Lioness struck the woodwork with terrific force and bounced back into play, only to be deflected by a La Digue Veuve player into her own net.
Lioness kept their lead to half-time, but a goal from Natacha Bibi in the 51st minute levelled the score.
When everyone thought the match was heading for a draw, meaning Lioness would have the upper hand, Bibi saved her team with a second goal in the 68th minute.
With 19 points after six wins, a draw and a loss, La Digue Veuve have won the championship with a match to spare. Their final game is against Praslin-based St Anne United, who will next meet Olympia Coast.
