Boxing: Aiba Youth World Championships-Nicette bows out in first bout |06 May 2010

Fighting in the bantamweight (54kg) division, Nicette lost his first bout on points – 0-13 – to Russian Semin Vadin who scored seven, two and four points in each of the three rounds.

Nicette, who was accompanied by coach Jerry Legras, was attempting to qualify for the first Youth Olympic Games scheduled for August 14-26 in Singapore, although he has already received a wild card to compete there.

The championships attracted a record 110 nations and featured 555 boxers aged 17 and 18. The bouts consisted of three rounds of three minutes each with one minute of rest between the rounds.

The four medalists from each weight division in Baku have automatically qualified for the Youth Olympics in Singapore.
At the end of the nine-day championship, Cuba crowned three of its four finalists and also won a silver and a bronze.
Hosts Azerbaijan, Germany, India, Ukraine, Brazil and Ireland also grabbed gold medals.

The Aiba World Youth Boxing Championships in Baku was the only boxing qualification event for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

Athletes from 25 countries booked spots for the inaugural YOG by winning medals in Baku.
Out of 466 athletes, 22 boxers from 15 countries made the finals.

The youth championships took place after a five-day postponement due to the travel situation from the volcanic ash cloud over Europe last month. Canada, Mexico and the United States did not send teams to the championships due to the travel situation. The boxers from those teams still have a chance to compete in the YOG.

In addition to youth championship medallists, Aiba will select 20 boxers for the YOG through a tripartite selection process.
