Kokonet speeds up with US $50,000 upgrade |26 March 2010

In addition to upgrading the company’s equipment linking it to internet-providing satellites, Kokonet has also switched to a new service provider offering increased bandwidth, an increase that will be passed on to its customers.

“This investment has enabled us to increase the amount of bandwidth we have available for our customers to use,” said Kokonet managing director Bernard Moutia.

“As a result, our customers will benefit from faster connection speeds and a better quality of service for everything from Kokozone wireless hotspots to Kokotalk VOIP telephone calls.”

The upgrade to the international gateway has also allowed the company to offer more clients dedicated bandwidth, an increasingly popular option amongst corporate customers, without compromising the connection speed provided to existing users.

Plans to connect Seychelles to the East African under-sea fibre-optic cable – which would offer significant improvements in internet connectivity – are progressing, but Kokonet still decided to go ahead with the satellite link upgrade.

“The fibre-optic cable will revolutionise Seychelles’ internet activity. But that’s unlikely to be connected before early 2012 and we don’t expect our customers to wait that long to see an improvement in their net access, which is why we went ahead with our investment plans,” said Mr Moutia.

The upgrade was completed in early March and improved the quality of dial-up, broadband and Kokozone internet hotspot services.
