Young athletes carry the baton in the Vallée de Mai
Measuring 664 millimetres and weighing 1,900 grams, the baton arrived on Sunday and toured Mahe on Monday before going to Praslin and La Digue on Tuesday.
Images captured by the camera inside the baton have been sent to the XIX Commonwealth Games website.
The queen’s baton relay has been the curtain-raiser to every Commonwealth Games since 1958 in Cardiff, Wales. One of the greatest traditions of the Commonwealth Games, it symbolises the gathering of people from across the Commonwealth at the four-yearly festival of sports and culture.
A prelude to the XIX Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, from October 3-14, the relay started with a ceremony at Buckingham Palace, London, on October 29, 2009, when Queen Elizabeth II entrusted the baton containing her message to the athletes engraved on a miniature 18-carat gold leaf, representative of an ancient Indian ‘patras’.
The relay will end at the Games’ opening ceremony in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on October 3, 2010. The final relay runner will hand the baton to the Queen or her representative, who will read her message to all athletes present to officially open the Games.
