Golf-Thrilling ‘Vijay’ win for Sunil Shah

Winner Shah (left) is congratulated by Club President Edwin Palmer

This tournament, a regular feature on the golfing calendar of the Seychelles Golf Club, attracted a modest field of 20 odd players, a fair number keeping themselves in the shade of the clubhouse on a swelteringly hot day, despite the attractive prizes.

It should have been Eddie Micock’s game after he threw the gauntlet with a marvellous 22 points on the hot nine.  Joe Andrade’s 19 points on the first nine matched Shah’s showing, while Peter Moncherry, Patrick Asba, Louis Vandagne and Gibran Rizvi had their collective feet in the door with 17 points each.  The rest of the field seemed to wander around listlessly, smelling the flowers and picking up the odd point or two.

Micock’s challenge petered out as he could rustle up only 14 strenuous points on the cooler nine and thus had to be content with the prize for the best front nine. Andrade chucked in the towel after a few bad holes.  Moncherry and Asba came back strongly with 19 points apiece and must have fancied their chances for first place with identical tallies of 36 points.

However, Sunil Shah crushed their hopes under his big 21-point effort.  While his total of 40 points disguised a couple of bad holes well, the margin of victory spoke volumes about his single-mindedness on this day.

Shah thus took first place easily, while Asba beat Moncherry on count-back to be placed second.  Edwin Palmer salvaged the prize for the best back nine with his 19 points.

In the absence of a representative from the sponsors, the Club President, Edwin Palmer, handed over the prizes. Club captain Sunil Shah noted that Vijay Construction has been a long-standing patron of the Club’s events and thanked them for their staunch support.
