Construction of new Baie Lazare School-R19.6m project to be completed by October next year |03 October 2007
Phase One of the R19.6 million project, funded by the Chinese Government, started in May this year and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. This phase comprises the construction of the crèche and a hall.
The second and third phases, which will include the building of classrooms, staff room, dining room as well as other facilities of a modern school, will start in January next year, with the whole project slated for completion in October.
This was said by the director general for Educational Planning and Resource Development in the Ministry of Education, Charles Confait, during a site visit made yesterday by Chinese Ambassador Geng Wenbing and the Minister for Education Bernard Shamlaye to see how work was progressing on the project.
Ambassador Wenbing, whose visit at the site yesterday was his first since the start of construction work, has expressed satisfaction with what he has seen and has promised constant monitoring by the embassy to ensure that the project progresses smoothly.
Also present during the visit were other officials from both the Chinese Embassy and the Ministry of Education.
Talking about the need for a new school, headteacher Milena Richard noted that the existing infrastructure is no longer conducive to learning.
“We are glad that a new school is being built and we will ensure that it is well maintained,” she said.
Work on the new Baie Lazare School is being undertaken by China State Construction.
According to Mr Confait, the Seychelles Government’s contributions towards the construction of the new school included civil works, leveling of the ground and fencing.
