Former Minister Loizeau passes away |01 February 2007
Mr Loizeau had been admitted since Monday in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) suffering from wounds inflicting on him by one of his sons, who is believed to be mentally unstable, a police communiqué said yesterday.
According to the communiqué, the son in question was arrested last Friday and is currently admitted in the Psychiatric Hospital at Les Cannelles.
A police investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Born on November 9, 1931, Mr Loizeau was educated at St Louis College and Seychelles College.
He joined the British Army in 1950 until 1954, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Mr Loizeau is most remembered as a key figure among the SPUP-SPPF militants especially with regard to the pre-Independence struggle for workers’ rights.
He became minister in both the Coalition and Transitional governments from June 1975 to June 1976, and was Minister in the Second Republic Government from 1977 to 1982, holding various portfolios among which were Public Works, and Labour & Social Services.
Mr Loizeau, who was also a former Central Committee Member of the Seychelles People’s Progressive Front, was chairperson of the project to construct the Maison du Peuple in the early 80s.
Mr Loizeau leaves behind 3 sons.
