Pointe Larue Primary School celebrates 10th Anniversary |22 June 2006
The commemorative event was marked by the presentation of tokens of appreciation to 13 teachers who had been with the school for the past ten years, an exhibition, the launching of the school’s newsletter, as well as an environmental and reading project.
Two former headteachers who were invited for the celebration, Monia Alvis and Regis Gonthier, also received tokens. A third one, Ghislaine Labrosse, who was also invited, was however unable to make it.
The exhibition, held under the theme “10 years of our existence”, consisted of a variety of souvenir pictures of events which pupils and staff have participated in, such as horticultural shows, educational visits and Teachers’ Day celebrations.
Performances of commemorative songs and poems also featured on the day’s programme.
Retracing the history of the school, the longest serving teacher, Aimée Mussard, who has been teaching for the past 36 years, noted that it was in September 1995 that the staff and pupils of the Pointe Larue Primary School moved into the new building.
“It was great for us to have our own building, as parents have shown more interest towards the work of their children. When we were together with the secondary school they (the parents) were a bit reluctant to come and visit,” she said.
The headteacher of the school, Fatima Agathine, took the opportunity of the big day to thank all the staff who have been around since the beginning for their support and devotion.
“Like many other schools, Pointe Larue Primary School has had its ups and downs but this has not prevented us from moving forward with the assistance of our staff and also with the help of the Ministry of Education and Youth,” Mrs Agathine remarked in her welcoming address.
She noted that apart from achievements at school level, the school’s greatest success has been to involve more parents in the school’s activities and also to discuss regularly their children’s performance with teachers.
Reminding her colleagues of the school’s motto “Together for the best”, Mrs Agathine urged them to continue to work as a team for the betterment of the school and the pupils.
Father John Gappy from the Roman Catholic Church was on hand to bless the school on this auspicious occasion, which also saw the presence of officials from the Ministry of Education and Youth.
The new Pointe Larue Primary School was officially opened on June 21, 1996 by the then Minister for Education, Patrick Pillay.
