Football: Airtel Cup-Happy Easter weekend for La Digue teams |28 March 2005
Last Thusday at Stad Linite, Anse Réunion edged St Louis thanks to a 17th minute right foot thunderbolt shot by Malagasy Firinga Fahidany and La Passe hammered Light Stars 7-3 in a match played at the La Digue playing field on Saturday.
It is worth noting that the La Passe/Light Stars clash was originally scheduled for Stad Linite but the Seychelles Football Federation (SFF) changed the venue late on Thursday afternoon.
Firinga’s strike gave St Louis goalkeeper Dominic Chang-Waye no chance as Anse Réunion, losing finalists to neighbours La Passe during the first edition of the Airtel Cup in 2003 and not getting past the group stage last year, showed their intention this time around with a second win in as many matches.
Their first win came against Survivors of Praslin on a 4-1 score. After doing everything except scoring against Survivors, Firinga’s goal kept Anse Réunion’s 100% record in the competition intact.
With their match against Light Stars moved to their home ground, La Passe, who were held 1-1 by SMB in their first match in the competition at Stad Linite, enjoyed a goal feast on Saturday.
Tanzanian Salum Kinje gave them a two-goal lead before Kevin Prosper cut the deficit to one goal at half-time.
Malagasy Amisy Voavy opened the floodgates for La Passe after the breather, scoring his team’s third goal before his two compatriots – Eric ‘Didy’ Rajaobery and Bruno Saindini – scored one each (5-2).
In between Rajaobery’s and Saindini’s goals, Didier Jean-Baptiste netted a goal for Light Stars before Antonio Cushion brought the score to 5-3 with a goal of his own.
Defender Ted Esther and striker Mervin Uranie put the issue beyond doubt with a goal apiece to bring the final score to 7-3.
It is to note that Light Stars edged Baie Ste Anne 96ers 2-1 in their first match.
