Gorilla rock must go

The Gorilla Rock will permanently cease to be a threat soon

A neighbouring boulder dislodged on March 11, 2002 raising fears that the Gorilla Rock might follow suit.

After a visit by geologists from Reunion, a memorandum was submitted to Cabinet in September that same year outlining the need for urgent action to be taken.

In March 2003 Government decided to go for the option of controlled blasting works.

The other options were for the building of bund and the relocation of residents below the hill but the Minister for Land Use and Habitat on Tuesday October 5 announced that the decision to remove the danger entirely and permanently has been arrived at.

Residents of La Batie will Saturday October 9 be involved in a mock evacuation at 3.00 p.m. in readiness for the work to begin on Monday.
