Seychelles to host 2015 African beach soccer championship |11 October 2013
Seychelles will host the 2015 African beach soccer championship, Seychelles Football Federation (SFF) chairman Elvis Chetty has said.
“The SFF bid to organise the championship and it has been successful,” said Mr Chetty.
The decision was taken by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) executive committee during one of its meetings at the Cairo headquarters.
It is expected that eight teams, including hosts Seychelles will take part in the championship. The winners and runners-up will represent Africa in the Fifa beach soccer world cup.
Senegal are the defending African beach soccer champions after beating Côte d’Ivoire 4-1 in the final of this year’s championship played in Morocco from May 22–26. Morocco finished third place after defeating Nigeria 7-2.
Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire represent Africa in the Fifa beach soccer world cup held in Tahiti from September 18-28 and won by Russia.
The Russian team well and truly proved that their shock win two years ago in Ravenna, Italy, was no fluke with a deserved and ultimately comfortable 5-1 win against Spain in the Tahiti 2013 finale.
Meanwhile, Caf has also confirmed the host countries for its upcoming competitions and the Moroccan host cities for the Africa Cup of Nations 2015.
The 2015 African U-23 championship will take place in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon has been selected to host the 2016 African women's championship, and Zambia will host the 2017 African U-20 championship.
Caf also confirmed timings of the following competitions:
• African women's championship in Namibia will be held from October 11-25, 2014;
• African U-20 championship in Senegal will be held from March 8-22, 2015;
• African U-17 championship in Niger will be held from May 2-16, 2015.
The four host cities for the Orange Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2015 have been confirmed as Rabat, Marrakech, Agadir and Tangier with Casablanca serving as an alternative venue for the January 17 to February 7, 2014 tournament.
