New guidelines and advanced screening to combat cervical cancer

 

The Health Care Agency under the Ministry of Health is taking important steps in the fight against cervical cancer in Seychelles. With 17 new cases registered in 2024 alone, and consistent annual figures over the past years – 15 in 2018, 18 in 2019, 15 in 2020, 11 in both 2021 and 2022, and 14 in 2023 – the urgency to enhance early detection and prevention efforts has never been more critical.

To address this public health concern, the Health Care Agency has rolled out new national cervical cancer prevention guidelines and upgraded the existing screening programme. The new protocol now integrates HPV/DNA testing and Liquid-Based Cytology (LBC) into the Pap smear programme, offering women in Seychelles a more accurate and timely method of detecting cervical cancer.
