Food safety is everyone’s business |13 June 2025
Food safety is everyone’s business
Although ‘access to food’ is a basic human right, access to safe and nutritious food is irrefutable in optimising our overall wellbeing and ensuring that we sustain life. It is unheard of in Seychelles that someone died after experiencing a foodborne illness but this is a reality in many parts of the world. It is estimated that out of around 600 million people who suffer from foodborne illnesses, over 400,000 people die annually.
In order to raise greater awareness among the public about the importance of keeping food safe, every year on June 7, we commemorate ‘World Food Safety Day’. The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) work collectively to facilitate the observance of this day, globally.
Yours in health
