Cabinet approves a number of legal and policy memoranda
President Wavel Ramkalawan chaired a scheduled meeting of the Cabinet on Wednesday May 21, in which a number of legal and policy memoranda were approved.
Cabinet approved the proposed revision of the Seychelles Islands Foundation (SIF) Decree of 1979 to reflect the Foundation’s expanded mandate. This includes the management of additional biodiversity sites, leadership in biosecurity on Assomption Island, and authority to engage in scientific research and fundraising activities.
Cabinet approved the proposal for Seychelles to submit a bid to host the 69th UN Tourism Regional Commission for Africa (CAF) Meeting and the thematic Conference on Tourism Human Resource Development in 2026. Cabinet recognised the opportunity to showcase Seychelles’ tourism leadership and address critical workforce challenges.
Cabinet approved the Solid Waste Management Policy 2025–2030, which sets out a comprehensive framework for transitioning Seychelles to a sustainable, inclusive, and circular waste management system. The policy outlines strategic actions to modernise infrastructure, reduce landfill use, promote recycling, improve collection systems and composting, strengthen institutional capacity, and improve public awareness and financing mechanisms. Cabinet endorsed the priority actions identified in the policy, agreed to allocate necessary resources for its implementation. Sites will be identified for regional composting projects and start-up funds will be made available for interested entrepreneurs. Steps will also be taken to enforce regulations against the illegal dumping of commercial waste.
