Health ministry registers an increase in dengue cases on Praslin
The Seychelles Ministry of Health has registered a recent increase in the number of confirmed cases of dengue fever on Praslin that has been reported by the National Surveillance system.
In a press release issued yesterday, the ministry said few of these cases required hospital admission. To note, Seychelles has been registering dengue cases since 2014. Dengue is a viral disease that is spread through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito.
According to the ministry, these mosquitoes thrive in stagnant or standing water, particularly in and around residential areas. Common symptoms of dengue fever include high fever, severe headache, behind-the-eye pain, joint and muscle pain, rash (appears a few days after fever onset), nausea and vomiting as well as fatigue and weakness. Most people with dengue have mild or no symptoms and get better within one or two weeks.
