Seychelles Breweries Ltd yesterday unveiled the third cohort of beneficiaries of the Seychelles Breweries Foundation, in a short ceremony at its headquarters in Le Rocher.

This marks the continuation of the foundation's mission to support and uplift communities with the support of various organisations.

The funds were handed over to the organisations by the company’s managing director, Yvonne Mwangi.

This year, five major projects have been chosen namely:

  •           Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority, (SPGA) – to carry out renovation works on two boardwalks with ramps to ease access of disabled visitors in the Veuve Reserve on La Digue;
  •           Sports 4 Schools Association – for the implementation of Sports promotion programmes for youths across the country;
  •           Foresters Football Club – for the implementation of the club’s youth development programme;
  •           Association for People with Hearing Impairment (Aphi) – for the training of sign language interpreters to make a broad range of experiences more accessible to people with hearing impairment;
  •           L’Entreprendre au Feminin Ocean Indien Seychelles (EFOIS) – for part payment of a testing equipment to be used at pre-production stage of value-added food products.

SPGA’s chief executive, Allen Cedras, said it was the first time they applied for such a grant and they were grateful to Seychelles Breweries for considering them, as it will benefit the disabled community of La Digue.

“We had other projects with other organisations buy this one is local,” explained Mr Cedras.

Anita Gardner of Aphi said the grant will help to train more people who have shown interest to become interpreters. So far 10 individuals have done some preliminary tests in order to enroll.

“This is very important for Seychelles because the community of people with hearing impairments finds it difficult to have access to certain services and information for instance on television,” expressed Mrs Gardner.

For project officer and regional chairperson of EFOIS, Claudette Albert, the fund is a huge assistance to their association, which is investing in an important piece of equipment to benefit the women business community undergoing training to standardise their products prior to hitting the market.

She has urged all the beneficiaries to spend the funds wisely and to be accountable for every cent. “To the rest of the business communities in Seychelles, I would also like to ask you to follow in the Seychelles Breweries’ footsteps and invest in our community,” said Mrs Albert.

Yesterday’s brief ceremony also saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Seychelles Breweries Ltd and the local dance group, Emergency Crew.

The signing was done by Ms Mwangi and Gael Richard, project manager of Emergency Crew.

Speaking on behalf of the dance crew, Wilnette Joseph expressed their deepest recognition and thanks to SeyPearl, a brand of the Seychelles Breweries Ltd, for its unwavering support over the past year. “Your partnership has truly been instrumental in propelling our dance group towards our vision and mission,” expressed Ms Joseph.

Speaking to the press, she added the MoU will further enhance the collaboration between Emergency Crew Academy and SeyPearl which started last year. Among them is an upcoming project for Family Day in May that will target obesity and help promote healthy living through dancing.
