‘Friendship and cooperation between India and
Seychelles will reach new heights,’ says HC Pande
The Indian diaspora and friends of India gathered yesterday to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Republic of India where the Indian flag was proudly hoisted at the Palais des Sports in Roche Caiman.
In the evening, a reception was held at Kempinski Resort in Baie Lazare in the presence of President Wavel Ramkalawan, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Roger Mancienne, and several ministers.
Seychelles and India established diplomatic ties after the independence of the former in 1976.
After the traditional toast, the Indian high commissioner, Kartik Pande, reflected on the occasion, celebrating India's journey as a proud nation of over 1.4 billion people and a major global player across diverse fields.
“The history of the Indian republic, spanning 75 years, stands as a testament to the rise of a determined people who have remained steadfast to the values that bind the nation.”
“In the past year, India achieved remarkable milestones, from the successful landing of Chandrayaan near the moon’s south pole to the launch of the Aditya solar mission, positioning itself at Lagrange Point 1 for a comprehensive study of the sun. India’s economic prowess continued to shine, with significant poverty reduction. India is already a USD 3 trillion economy and treading confidently on to the next step, becoming a USD 5 trillion economy,” shared HC Pande.
HC Pande also spoke about India’s global contribution, which remained unwavering under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “The nation’s role as a 'vishwamitra' or a partner to the world was particularly evident during India’s G20 Presidency, where the theme of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future,’ echoed the ancient belief of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ garnering widespread appreciation and endorsement.”
India’s commitment to the global south was showcased by the historic induction of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 during the New Delhi Summit in September 2023. Through the G20 Leaders' Declaration, India championed a global south-centric agenda, emphasising collaboration to address global challenges.
Looking ahead, the call to action is clear for all Indians – to transform the country into a developed nation by 2047, marking the 'AmritKaal' period of development and global leadership. As India passes the baton to Brazil after a successful G20 Presidency, the nation looks back with satisfaction at its role in shaping the global agenda.
Turning the focus to bilateral relations, HC Pande spoke about the warm and cordial ties between India and Seychelles. “In 2023, these ties deepened across various sectors, including maritime security, capacity building, health, education, and development partnership, based on the principles of SAGAR and the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.”
The year saw notable events such as port calls, joint exercises, defense equipment gifting, and progress in developmental projects, cultural activities, and high-level visits between ministers.
The Seychelles-India partnership extended to regional and international forums, with joint efforts on non-traditional maritime challenges, climate change, and environmental issues, shared HC Pande.
He also spoke about the increase in visitors from India, a rise in bilateral trade, and cultural exchanges such as Seychellois youth witnessing India’s Republic Day Parade and artisans participating in the Surajkund Mela. The Indian diaspora serves as a living bridge between the two nations, contributing to Seychelles’ development.
HC Pande expressed confidence in the enduring friendship and cooperation between India and Seychelles, and confirmed India's commitment to standing with Seychelles as a close friend and a reliable all-weather partner. As the two nations continue to collaborate on maritime security, regional stability, and developmental aspirations, the high commissioner envisions the friendship reaching new heights.
On this Republic Day, HC Pande wished all Indian citizens, people of Indian origin, and friends of India a joyous celebration.
Speaking on behalf of Seychelles, the minister responsible for foreign affairs, Sylvestre Radegonde, also highlighted the deep-rooted friendship between the two countries which he said goes beyond the vast expanse of our ocean.
“It is embedded in our shared culture, history, and people to people exchanges. India remains a vital partner in the socio economic development of Seychelles evident in a robust and multi-faceted collaboration across various domains, including security, education, health infrastructure development investment and trade.”
“As we celebrate India's Republic Day, we also look forward to further strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Seychelles and India. Our shared challenges and aspirations make collaboration imperative and it is heartening to witness the commitment of both nations to work together for a better future,” added Minister Radegonde.
