The Landscape and Waste Management Agency (LWMA) said it had an encouraging turnout for its last clean-up campaign for the year, held over the weekend.

In a press conference at its headquarters in town yesterday, LWMA said around 30 people turned up on Saturday. However, due to bad weather on Sunday, a dozen people showed up.

Senior communication officer, Terry Servina, consultant Camille Mondon and chief inspector Brian Quatre were giving feedback and statistics from the latest clean-up session.

According to Ms Mondon, the exercise was quite successful, with several trucks, loaded with waste being transported, and the help of volunteers making the process as smooth as possible.

LWMA had also provided a skip service in Providence for businesses affected by the December 7 explosion. The different skips were labelled for different types of waste and placed in various parts of the zone to facilitate disposal.

According to LWMA, an average of 20 tonnes of waste was collected, during 18 trips of bulky waste and a trip of green waste to the landfill. This coupled with five trips to the skip; a trip for bulky waste, one for green waste and three trips for scrap metals on Mahé.

On Praslin, the result was greater with four more trips than Mahé, while on La Digue, there were fewer trips recorded as most people usually dispose their waste directly onto the landfill, said Ms Mondon.

For his part, Mr Servina stressed one of the main issues presented over the weekend was the lack of classification of the waste being transported.

“We would like to remind the people once more to classify their different waste ranging from bulky to green waste,” said Mr Servina.

They also encouraged the public to bring their waste to the landfill as often as possible, which would help maintain a clean environment.

LWMA also plans to hold another clean-up exercise next month, to further influence more people to help keep Seychelles clean.
