The Mahé Shipping Company Ltd has donated a set of crutches to the Anse Boileau district administration and to the district’s home for the elderly.

It was the managing director of the company, Angelic Appoo, who presented a set of crutches to Leonne Florentine, the district administrator and Eileen Cadeau, in charge of the Anse Boileau home for the elderly, in a short ceremony held at the home on Saturday morning.

Ms Appoo said the donation was part of a consignment of 250 crutches which had been in their warehouse for almost three years.

She added that the company will donate the others to other homes and districts across the country.

“Mahé Shipping is doing this small donation in commemoration of the International Day of Older Persons that have just passed and we wanted to do our fair share by contributing towards the community. We have always been involved in assisting the community in the past and it is something that we will continue to do,” Ms Appoo said.

Given that only one among six men and four women in the ten one-bedroom apartments is using crutches due to an accident some three weeks ago,  Ms Cadeau said that they will  keep some in case of any eventualities and share the remaining ones to other homes in need.

For her part, Mrs Florentine said the crutches will be distributed to people in need in the community. They both thanked Mahé Shipping for the donation.

Other than the donation, the company’s staff also conducted some voluntary work around the home which included cleaning of the surrounding environment and giving the rooms a fresh coat of paint.

Some tenants also took the opportunity to get their hair and nails done while their rooms were being cleaned.

“I think it is a very good initiative on their part to come here on their busy Saturday to make the donations and to assist and entertain the residents. We do welcome any individual or groups who would like to come and visit our elderly and to entertain them. I would like to thank Mahé Shipping for this great initiative,” Ms Cadeau said.
