Every year on September 5, the world comes together to observe International Charity Day; a day dedicated to celebrating and promoting charitable acts around the globe. This special day serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion, generosity, and solidarity with those in need.
International Charity Day, also known as World Charity Day, was first established by the United Nations in 2012. Its primary purpose is to recognise and promote the crucial role that charities and non-profit organisations play in addressing humanitarian issues, providing essential services, and advocating for positive change.
One of the core messages of International Charity Day is the power of collective action. It emphasises that when individuals, communities, and organisations join forces, they can create a significant impact and make the world a better place for all.
On this day, people from all walks of life are encouraged to engage in acts of kindness and charity. Whether it is donating to a charitable organisation, volunteering time and skills, or simply helping a neighbour in need every act of kindness counts. Small gestures of goodwill can ripple outward, creating a positive impact that extends far beyond the initial action.
It also serves as a platform to raise awareness about pressing global issues, such as poverty, hunger, access to education, healthcare, and environmental conservation. Charitable organisations play a vital role in tackling these challenges, and their work is often amplified on this day.
One of the best ways to take part in International Charity Day is by supporting charitable organisations and non-profits. Donations, whether monetary or in kind, can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need.
This day is also an opportunity to inspire and educate future generations about the importance of philanthropy and giving back. Schools, colleges, and community organisations often use the day as a chance to engage students in charitable activities and discussions about social responsibility.
Seychelles NATION reached out to the Seychelles Island Foundation, a non-profit charitable organisation, to get their reaction regarding the celebration. “On International Day of Charity 2023, the Seychelles Islands Foundation (SIF) reflects on its commitment to preserve and protect invaluable treasures of Seychelles’ natural heritage. This cause knows no personal profit or benefit, but rather allows reinvestment into the local community, whilst at the same time, maintaining our sites to the status of global heritage,” they stated.
“This is not something that we can do alone. It thrives through the support of our local and international community in any form, whether it is through volunteering your time, making a donation regardless of amount or simply lending your advocacy. Conservation at our sites is a collective and charitable endeavour, that although directly managed by SIF, it cannot be shouldered without the engagement and support, in whatever way it is available. We thank you for joining us on this meaningful journey towards a sustainable future for our natural world,” said the SIF representative.
While September 5 is a designated day for charity, the spirit of giving and kindness should be carried throughout the year. Acts of charity, no matter how small, have the potential to create a more compassionate and equitable world for everyone.
