Members of the public are being urged to take advantage of free yoga courses being offered by the Diabetic Society of Seychelles at the Roche Caiman community centre, for the benefit of their health.

It was the chairman of the society, Dr Murthy PIllay, who made the appeal to the press on location on Monday evening where a talk and free yoga session took place.

The yoga sessions for a better lifestyle which started on Sunday are being organised by the society to commemorate the 9th Remembrance Day anniversary of the late founder and chairman, Deenu Pillay, on July 25.

The sessions from 6am to 9am and from 5pm to 8pm are being conducted by Ardent Disciples of Sri Vethathiri Maharishi, India.

“The yoga session being presented is very unique in style and very good for the health. I would like to call on members of the public to come and enjoy the benefit of the yoga sessions. Anyone wishing to join can call us on 4224737 for registration, and if there is a great demand, we will extend the sessions up to Friday,” Dr Murthy said.

To coincide with the yoga sessions, the society also invited renowned international speaker and eminent cardiologist from Chennai, India, Prof. Dr V. Chockalingam, to share his knowledge on heart and diabetic diseases.

The professor is a strong believer that heart attack, the number one killer disease globally, can be effectively prevented and cured by the implementation of a positive lifestyle. He has been practicing cardiology for the past 55 years.

“We know that such non-communicable diseases, like diabetes, hypertension and obesity, are all connected to causing problems to the heart and given the high prevalence of those non-communicable diseases in the country, we thought it would be better to invite Prof. Chockalingam to talk to the population on how to put obesity at bay and how to prevent oneself from getting a heart attack,” Dr Murthy said.

During his talk on Monday, Prof. Chockalingam said that wherever he goes on his visits to share his knowledge the aim is to communicate the message on how to make the society healthy and a diabetic free state.

He noted that non-communicable killer diseases, namely heart attack and cancer including accidents are highly prevalent but they can be prevented at one hundred percent (100%) through positive mindset.

“All diseases start from your mindset. The moment your mindset is negative, for example anxiety, stress, worry, anger etc. it helps to increase your sugar, pressure and cholesterol levels. So the best way is to turn negative thoughts into positive thoughts and by positive thoughts I mean be happy. When you are happy the positive hormones will remove all the diseases,” said Prof. Chockalingam, who noted that apart from indulging in positive thinking, we have to eat healthy and exercise adequately to beat heart attack and obesity.

Prof. Chockalingam, who also conducted the talk in Tamil on Sunday, left the country yesterday while the yoga session continues today at the Roche Caiman community centre.
