Local businesses helping Seychelles achieve climate targets |22 April 2023

  •           S4S undertakes environmental sustainability audits

In November 2021, Seychelles formally submitted its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) report to the United Nations, outlining its commitment to fighting climate change and take action to adapt to climate change impacts. In a nutshell, Seychelles has committed to protect nature, especially ocean ecosystems, reduce our carbon footprint, and become more climate resilient. As climate change is everyone’s business, the NGO Sustainability for Seychelles (S4S) has been trying to help local stakeholders, including businesses, to understand Seychelles’ commitments, why they matter, and how we can all help. This is being done with support from the GEF Small Grants Programme.

As part of this work, S4S is carrying out environmental sustainability audits with businesses in Seychelles. It is simply an informal audit, discussing what the business is already doing and possible areas for action with business managers, writing up a short report for our records and the business owner, and posting good practices on social media if the business owner agrees. These audits are carried out by three S4S project consultants – Rosetta Alcindor, Victoria Alis and Amina Furneau.

S4S is also hosting an NDC workshop for businesses on May 5, from 3pm to 5pm at At Sea Restaurant & Bar, Perseverance. At this short, informative session, businesses will have the opportunity to advance their understanding of the NDCs and be guided on how to adopt new best practices or improve on existing ones to help Seychelles attain the climate action goals it has set. It is S4S hope that businesses will also recognise the many benefits climate actions can bring to the business itself, the community and the environment for generations to come.
