President Wavel Ramkalawan is leading the Seychelles delegation at the 2023 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) currently being held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (Adnec).

The delegation on Monday attended the opening ceremony held in the presence of many heads of state, high-level officials and dignitaries from around the globe. Other African countries represented by their heads of state and government officials at the event included Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, Uganda and Ethiopia.

The official opening ceremony marked the kick-off for the ADSW, bringing the world’s sustainability community together and setting the agenda for the discussions and debate throughout the week.

Over 4,000 global delegates are attending the event, from world leaders and senior policymakers to business leaders, scientists, and academics.

Also held alongside the opening ceremony was the Zayed Sustainability Prize Award ceremony. The award was established in 2008 and is the United Arab Emirates’ pioneering global award for recognising excellence in sustainability.

Launched at the 2008 World Future Energy Summit by President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Prize is a tribute to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s legacy of humanitarianism and commitment to sustainability.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize recognises non-profit organisations (NPOs), small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and high schools for their impactful, innovative and inspiring sustainable solutions across the categories of health, food, energy, water and global high schools.

The Seychelles delegation comprises the Minister for Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment, Flavien Joubert; the chief executive of the Public Utilities Corporation, Joel Valmont; and the chief executive of the Seychelles Meteorological Services, Vincent Amelie.

Aside from the main events, the Seychelles delegation is also taking part in the various forums and thematic sessions being held as part of ASWD 2023.

The accompanying photos show some highlights of the Seychelles delegation’s participation at the event.
