Ministry gives update on ciguatera fish poisoning |23 November 2022

Since the public announcement of certain persons developing symptoms that were related to ciguatera exposure on Thursday July 28, 2022, the Food Control Unit in the Public Health Authority has not registered any further reported incidences whereby members of the public have suffered from signs and symptoms of ciguatera poisoning after consuming the Varvara fish.

The last reported incidences were on Friday July 29, 2022.

The Public Health Authority (PHA) did its utmost to remove the suspected fish, whole or processed, from the market.

The Ministry of Health is advising the public that fish, including Varvara, is safe for human consumption.

It is worth reminding that fish is one of the most important sources of protein and other essential nutrients, and its consumption is encouraged.
