Electoral Commission takes voter registration closer to public

Chief registration officer Sheena Boniface

• Targets first-time voters

The Electoral Commission is holding voter registration outside of its main office today as part of activities to coincide with International Day of Democracy.

According to its chief registration officer, Sheena Boniface, they have set up locations at STC Hypermarket, Independence House as well as at the Seychelles Tourism Academy.

Ms Boniface said as usual they are encouraging voters to check their names on the register, especially first-time voters.

“The station at STA is part of our outreach programme at academic institutions and we hope to register at least 29 young voters there today,” she said.

There are 3326 eligible first-time voters for the period 2021/2022 and Ms Boniface said already 7 percent have registered, which represents 242 people.

“It may not seem like a lot but it is more than what we usually get during a non-election year,” she explained.

The Electoral Commission says the special stations at Independence House and STC Hypermarket will open from 10am till 5pm.

Members of the public are invited to submit their applications for registration as a voter, transfer, change of name, correction, or objections at the centres.

This year’s theme for International Day of Democracy is ‘Protecting Press Freedom for Democracy’.
