Minister Joubert attends launch ceremony

The Minister for Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment, Flavien Joubert, attended the launch of the Joint Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Fund Project that will fund the Circular Economy project for Seychelles.

The event was held yesterday at the Intercontinental Hotel Balaclava in Mauritius.

The project, which will be implemented over two years, aims at “contributing to establishing an enabling environment to promote sustainable Green and Blue Economy in Mauritius and Seychelles” whereby Seychelles will be benefiting from US $705,000 for the purpose of advancing the Blue Economy agenda in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The main focus of the project for Seychelles will be to develop a circular economy roadmap and action plan and to develop a financing strategy.

This will also focus on strengthening partnerships between public and private sector by supporting private sector innovation in the circular economy through a seed funding mechanism.

The project will also create investment opportunities that will benefit the Seychelles’ transformative economic agenda of diversification of the economy through creating diversity in livelihoods, reinforcing local resilience, contributing to poverty reduction as well as reducing the amount of solid waste that is being directed to the landfill.

The minister was accompanied by key representatives from various ministries and agencies whose contributions are key to the cause of the waste management and circular economy including the principal secretary in the Blue Economy department, Kenneth Racombo; representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism; Ministry of Youth, Sports and Family; Ministry of Investment, Entrepreneurship and Industry; the Landscape and Waste Management Agency and the Citizens Engagement Platform Seychelles.

Also in attendance were the Minister for Energy and Public Utilities of the Republic of Mauritius, Hon. George Pierre Lesjongard, and UN representatives Christine Umotoni, the UN resident coordinator for Mauritius and Seychelles and Sonja Leighton-Kone, acting deputy executive director for Unep (United Nations Environmental Programme).
