Seychelles Breweries launches ‘All female apprenticeship scheme’

As part of Diageo, Seychelles Breweries Ltd (SBL) is launching the ‘All female apprenticeship scheme’.

This opportunity is tailor made for young women fresh out of post-secondary schooling with limited or no experience but looking to venture into the world of work and build a career in a vibrant and dynamic industry.

SBL shared that it is an exciting initiative to expose women to working in manufacturing and production and empower them to move this industry forward.

The human resources director for Indian Ocean, Shirley Louise, noted that “this scheme is in the service of building our business and credentials as a leading employer from an inclusivity perspective. Additionally, it is about building careers for women in a dynamic and vibrant industry. Seychelles Breweries is right up there in creating opportunities for women to succeed today and tomorrow”.

With this programme, SBL aims to increase the ratio of male:female as part of its inclusion and diversity plan. Its current workforce is made up of 103 males and 53 females.

 

What is the ‘All female apprenticeship scheme’?

An apprenticeship is a real paid job, where you will learn the skills, knowledge and behaviour needed to perform your role. Apprentices will work through a combination of on-the-job training and off-the-job learning and development.

 

Apprenticeship schemes

Engineering apprenticeship schemes: The aim is to learn in the real-world and develop your skills with Seychelles only total beverage company. Learn everything from mechanical fitting, turning and welding to isolation problem solving and planned maintenance. Engineering is all about problem solving to ensure that all production runs smoothly, and that Seychelles Breweries delivers to its customers and consumers.

The profile requires for the apprentice to provide technical support function for manufacturing operations, including troubleshooting equipment and process issues, validation and qualification activities of the manufacturing site. She will work both autonomously and cross-functionally with Production, Maintenance, Quality, Facilities, and Safety to ensure that the engineering activities/projects are completed as per defined project schedule. She will also work in establishing and coordinating corrective and preventive maintenance activities for Production/Operations equipment within the manufacturing site.

Manufacturing apprenticeship schemes: She will be working alongside seasoned team members in our manufacturing team, she will learn all there is to know about brewing and packaging production environments. The apprentice will boost her knowledge by taking on all kinds of hands-on roles and responsibilities. Each one brings the chance to oversee standard operating procedures, including machine operation, product quality and of course, health and safety.

The profile requires for the apprentice to facilitate efficient operations within the production area, to optimize existing processes, implement new processes and to ensure that production goals are met. She will monitor performance of equipment, machines and tools and corrects equipment problems or process parameters that produce non-conforming products, low yields or product quality issues, all within a highly regulated manufacturing environment. The apprentice will analyse and solve problems from basic engineering principles, theories to meet strategic goals and objectives of the company. She will also apply project management methodologies and continuous improvement philosophy to manage production, process and systems improvement, respectively.

Technical apprenticeship schemes: Experience the day to day running of the brewery ensuring that all the products we produce is safe and of a high standard. A career in Quality means feeling a sense of pride in knowing that you have ensured the products we sell is safe for consumption. The apprentice will be given the chance to work alongside many different departments to ensure that all manufacturing is done correctly, safely and to a high standard of quality. She will learn about areas such as food science in the context of food safety legislation and quality standards.

SBL is looking for Female Apprentices who can bring new ideas, a different way of thinking, who can challenge the way the company does things. Female Apprentices willing to progress and develop throughout SBL’s programme by taking advantage of all provided opportunities. Female Apprentices with different experiences, exposure and education.

The essential ingredients SBL is looking for are: Passion for work; determined individual, resilient, proud, learning agility, problem solving, team player, flexibility, great attitude and ambitious.

“What more could we ask for? Well, some solid results, of course. We want ladies with at least post-secondary qualification from relevant institutions including Maths and English. Then there’s all the ingredients that you will need if you are going to make it here, you are going to need all that in abundance,” says SBL.

 

How will it work and what to expect?

Full time employment and just like another member of the team working and learning on the job. Will have an employment contract including apprenticeship agreement. Tiered remuneration for Year 1 and Year 2. 20% of the time dedicated to off-the-job learning – 1 day per week dedicated to learning – Onsite and delivered through My Learning Hub – Face to face with subject matter experts.
