Suspected drugs found hidden in footwear destined for person on remand

The shoes found with the suspected drugs

The Seychelles Prison Service yesterday confirmed that during the afternoon of Sunday July 25, 2021, a 17-year-old female was detained by prison staff at the SPS Bois de Rose detention remand facility after a search of footwear she had brought in for a remand inmate was found to have suspect drugs hidden inside.

The female who reported to the detention remand facility with a pair of shoes she brought for a person on remand who was to make an appearance in court yesterday, Monday July 26, 2021, was detained and handed over to the Anti-Narcotics Bureau (ANB) of the Seychelles Police for further investigation.

“The drugs suspected to be heroin and in small amounts was found hidden within the shoes. A small amount or not the fact remains that there was an attempt, even if the suspect at this time says she was unaware, to deliver a narcotic to someone awaiting trial. We can certainly appreciate that within the drug culture there is much abuse and using of people. Citizens need to be smarter and not be duped to support such negative acts,” wrote a communiqué from the SPS.

The prison service seeks to remind and advise members of the public to be aware of what they are bringing when cleared to do so by the prison authority.
