Message from Honourable Wavel Ramkalawan, leader of the opposition, to the Seychellois athletes returning home today

Mr Ramkalawan

‘We salute you as the youth who made us proud’

As our athletes return home today after taking part in the just ended Indian Ocean Islands Games in Mauritius, the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, Wavel Ramkalawan, has sent a message congratulating the medal bearers and everyone who gave of their best.

Mr Ramkalawan’s message reads:

“As our youth left for the Indian Ocean Games in Mauritius, I bade them good luck urging them to give of their best and to bring back gold medals. The games are over, the medals have been shared out. It has been a challenging experience for our athletes, but we are proud that they too, have collected a fair share of these medals. On behalf of my colleagues and on my personal name, I wish to congratulate the medal bearers and everyone who gave of their best.

“Our golden girl, Felicity Passon, gave us two new versions of her surname: Passion and `Poisson’. Passon swam like a ‘Poisson’ with so much ‘Passion.’ Congratulations to you for the biggest harvest of gold medals. You have demonstrated the real Seychellois spirit of wanting to win and by exhibiting such energy and desire, you have encouraged our youth to follow in your footsteps.

“The women’s volleyball team kept us on tenterhooks throughout the five sets. Congratulations to them for never giving up even when they were down by two sets. They climbed the hill fervently to claim what they truly are: Indian Ocean Champions. Our hearts go out to you.

“As we take a closer look at the results, it is obvious that with greater preparation and commitment, Seychelles looks poised to do extremely well at the next games, but even better, to stand as a giant in our region and on the continent. From weightlifting, athletics, boxing, football, boxing, sailing and others, I believe we can do well.

“I congratulate Keddy (Agnes) and Janet (George), who through injury missed on their guaranteed gold medals. Don’t be discouraged. We know the mettle you are made of. Your hearts were in the right place, but unfortunately your fate was to be different.

“A warm welcome back home our heroes. We support you and we salute you as the youth who made us proud.”
