United Seychelles sends wishes of goodwill to the African Union |26 May 2021

“On this auspicious occasion, the United Seychelles extends wishes of goodwill and good health to you, Your Excellency President Felix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo and the African Union, and pledges its support for your endeavor to render Africa more united and peaceful.

“May 25, 1963 was a momentous event at the creation of the OAU (Organisation of African Unity), the predecessor of present day African Union (AU).

Most historians will agree that without the intervention and participation of the OAU in the political processes of the continent, the independence of Africa, including that of the Seychelles, would have not been possible. We are here reminded of the recognition by the OAU in April 1973, of the Seychelles People’s United Party (SPUP), the precursor of the United Seychelles, as the only organisation fighting for Independence of Seychelles. Three years later, Seychelles would achieve full independence.

“Today, we not only celebrate our solidarity and successes, but we should also take time to reflect on the many challenges facing Africa, including the global pandemic. Africa remains economically disadvantaged despite it being the richest continent in the world.

“If today we find it necessary to remind ourselves of the richness of our arts, culture, and heritage, it is because of the inequalities and rampant poverty brought about by over three hundred years of colonialism and neo-colonialism.

We must redress this injustice and teach our youths about the greatness of our history and culture, before colonialism, and about the great potential that we still have today. The youths of Africa must launch themselves in the forefront in a new revolution, many times more strenuous and arduous than our fight for political independence, and that is the economic independence of Africa. Africa is too rich to be poor. Let us tap this wealth, and make the most of our rich culture.

“Your Excellency please accept the assurances of my highest esteem,”

Dr Patrick Herminie

Party leader United Seychelles
