Chaka Brothers signs up to support prison rehabilitation efforts • Second line of cinnamon harvesting to be opened up |31 March 2021
Chaka Brothers and the Seychelles Prison Service have agreed to collaborate in the harvesting of cinnamon bark.
The partnership was formalised yesterday by the Superintendent of Prisons, Raymond St Ange, and the chairman & managing director of Chaka Brothers, Gafoor Yakub.
“Chaka Brothers, with a long and well respected presence in the Seychelles business community, was at one time a dominant exporter of cinnamon to the world markets. Today with Chaka Brothers we are opening up further opportunities for our inmates to not only learn new skills in cinnamon harvesting with yet another enterprise, but as well doing our small part to help in reviving this industry,” said Supt. St Ange.
Discussions with Chaka Brothers have been ongoing for many months and with yesterday’s signing, Chaka Brothers is now part of the rehabilitation process that gives opportunities to inmates to earn an allowance while learning and applying new skills.
“For the prison service, this will be the second private enterprise to engage with us on the ‘Project Phoenix’ rehabilitation programme,” says a communiqué from the Seychelles Prison Service.
