Committee responsible for reviewing street names holds first meeting • Public has until February 12 to submit their suggestions

Streets like Francis Rachel (photo) are expected to get new names

The committee responsible for reviewing the names of all roads in Victoria linked to the 1977 coup d’état held its first meeting recently with the idea of reconciling people and removing the controversy surrounding the coup d’état.

According to the chairperson of the committee, David Andre, who is also the Mayor of Victoria, said that streets like 5th June Avenue, Revolution Avenue, Francis Rachel Street and Liberation Avenue are being relooked at and the committee is urging the public to send their suggestions to us regarding the names of the streets in the district of Victoria.

“Together we will have the opportunity to bring the changes instead of bringing more controversies. We hope that we will help the population to heal from some deep wounds and help unify the country. The public has until February 12 to send their suggestions to the committee,” Mr Andre said.

Apart from the names in Victoria, the committee will also be looking at the names of all the streets that are controversial and sounds weird in Seychelles like Gaza etc. For this exercise we will do it with the different districts. Members of the public will also be able to send their contributions.

To recall, the Office of the President announced the creation of the committee in late December 2020. The committee has the responsibility to propose new names to replace those that should be changed as well as henceforth be engaged in the task of proposing names for new roads and estates created.

The committee will submit recommendations to the President for further consideration by the cabinet of ministers.

Besides Mr Andre as chair, the other members of the committee are Judge Bernardin Renaud (vice-chairperson), Hon. Bernard Georges, Dr Odile Decomarmond, Beryl Ondiek, Julie Low and Tony Mathiot.

All suggestions should be sent to the Mayor’s Office email address at info@mayorsofficeseychelles.com, call on 4225970 or visit the website by clicking www.mayorsofficeseychelles.com
