Up till yesterday, 28 percent of the country’s adult population had been vaccinated as part of the ongoing national immunisation campaign which began on Sunday January 10, the Health Care Agency has announced.

There are presently seven centres offering jabs of the BBIBP-CorV, or Sinopharm and the AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine AZD1222 or Covishield vaccine on Mahé and the inner islands.

While the Sinopharm vaccine is being administered to the local workforce below the age of 60 years old, the Covishield which was introduced yesterday is solely being given to the senior citizens or those who are 60 years old and above.

On Monday January 25, 1,015 people took the Sinopharm vaccine, bringing the number of vaccinated people to 19,889.

According to the deputy chief executive of the Health Care Agency, Kathleen Cecile, administering the Covishield vaccine will follow a well-detailed plan, offering the service at district level on specific days only, between 8am and 5pm.

Elderly citizens from Anse Etoile, Beau Vallon, Port Glaud, Anse Aux Pins and Grand Anse Praslin were the first recipients of the vaccines yesterday, while today, the campaign will focus on senior citizens from Bel Air, Roche Caïman (International Conference Centre Seychelles ‒ ICCS), Glacis (Beau Vallon district administration office), Anse Boileau (Grand Anse Mahé district administration office), Anse Royale (district administration office) and Baie Ste Anne Praslin (district administration office).

Mrs Cecile also explained that the department of health is also liaising with the Seychelles Public Transport Corporation (SPTC) which is providing transportation to and from the vaccination centres.

She also asked everyone to follow the instructions and respect their day and date of vaccination to avoid confusion and also overcrowding.

Meanwhile, the department is still administering the Sinopharm vaccine to essential workers and other willing individuals.
