In a bid to engage more citizens to demonstrate a sense of patriotism, the People’s Republic of China yesterday donated a total of 60,000 Seychelles flags to the President of the Republic Wavel Ramkalawan.

The donation was presented to President Ramkalawan at State House by Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China Guo Wei, following a plea by President Ramkalawan for citizens to come together and show solidarity towards one another, and to keep focused towards the betterment of the country.

“In fact, I came here today to present 60,000 Seychelles flags to his Excellency the President, to respond to the patriotic plea. Patriotism is very important at this difficult time with the pandemic. We are presently living through these difficult times but it is with patriotism that we can unite the entire nation, and that we will have more conviction to overcome the difficulties,” Ambassador Guo stated.

The flags are to be distributed to citizens through members of the National Assembly (MNAs) for their respective districts. Some lucky donors who yesterday called at State House to present donations to the Covid-19 Relief Fund were among the first citizens to be gifted a flag.

Mayor David Andre, who facilitated the discussions with the Chinese embassy, says the donation will be invaluable in demonstrating the Seychellois sense of pride.

“The donation follows the President’s appeal and he asked me to discuss with the Chinese ambassador whether China can donate the flags, principally with the aim of demonstrating the patriotism that we need in our country, and the solidarity. It must not be forgotten that a flag is symbolic of the nation and the five colours symbolises all that we represent. If each house or citizen can fly a flag on their house, it goes to show the sense of belonging, the patriotism and the sense of solidarity that we want to be propagated in our communities,” he said.

“The aim is that each house will have a flag and it will be distributed through members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and others who want one will also have access to them, to show that each family and institution is proud to float the Seychelles flag,” concluded the Mayor.
