Longtime honorary consul Joe Chung-Faye dies

Joe Chung-Faye, the longtime honorary consul for the Royal Kingdom of Thailand to Seychelles, has died.

Born on August 15, 1935 to immigrant parents who owned and ran a shop at Mont Fleuri, Mr Chung-Faye battled with chronic health problems for the past year and succumbed to his illnesses on Saturday January 16, 2021 at the age of 85.

Mr Chung-Faye served in the post of honorary consul for the Kingdom of Thailand to Seychelles for 20 years (since 2000).

A well-known businessman and owner of Island Trading Co Ltd, Mr Chung-Faye and wife Jeanine Chung-Faye opened a new travel agency named Coco de Mer Travel at Bodco building, New Port in January 2007.

Mr Chung-Faye was educated at the former Seychelles College along with two former Presidents ‒ the late James Mancham and Albert Rene. He played for the Seychelles College football team and was a proficient player.

He then attended the St Mary’s College in Southampton, England, for his A-Levels and stayed there until 1993. While in England, he worked at Cable & Wireless and eventually owned a successful Kitchen Design and Build business.

Upon his return to Seychelles, he went into business and joined Island Trading (Pty) Ltd and eventually owned it outright.

He also taught at the Seychelles Institute of Management (SIM) now The Guy Morel Institute.

He was also an executive committee member of the Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and served on the Chinese Association of Seychelles.

His passions included Cordon Bleu cooking, hosting lunches and dinners for friends and family members, watching dog racing, football, hockey, bridge, golf and going to the market every day.

Mr Chung-Faye is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Jeanine, his four step children, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren, his sister in Hong Kong, nephews and nieces.
