Lockdown and how to cope with these trying times |05 January 2021

As of January 4, Seychelles has entered its second “lockdown” (albeit on a less severe scale than the first one last year) and once again we have entered a very challenging time. It is of course important to listen to our local health advisors, doctors and stick to our local guidelines.

Although we have been suffering from the worldwide effects of Covid-19 for over a year now, it is still very hard to accept this drastic change in lifestyle.

Masks are now mandatory, public gatherings are now being drastically restricted, restaurants, movie theaters, churches, gyms, night clubs and many more of our favourite pastime activities have now been forced into temporary closure.

Having a lot of free time on our hands is not a reason to be lazy. It would be a good idea to keep ourselves busy by being productive. We can learn to do things that we always wanted to try but never had the time or motivation to do.

This can include hobbies that we simply dropped or lost interest in or completely new experiences that we have yet to try.

This can be in the form of very simple tasks such as; writing, reading, cooking, painting, exercising and many more.

We can even challenge ourselves by learning a new language, learning to code, play an instrument, learning to bake, indoor gardening, learning to dance, sing and many more.

In this day and age it is also much easier to access information and learn how to do new things. If you have access to the internet, detailed videos online can be easily found to teach you knew things. Platforms such as Youtube and Wikipedia offer a vast amount of easily accessible knowledge that could be of great use to us.

This is also a great time to reflect on ourselves and appreciate the value of the relationships we have. It would be great to check up on friends and family and reconnect with anyone that we no longer talk to.

In conclusion, we should stay home, stay safe and keep ourselves busy. This is a great opportunity to learn new skills. And rediscover ourselves.
