Empowering women forms part of Global Entrepreneurship Week

The panel discussion in full swing

The Enterprise Seychelles Agency (Esa) in collaboration with the department of Entrepreneurship and Industry (DEI) organised a panel discussion under the theme ‘Women-preneurs’ on Wednesday this week to commemorate the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2020.

It is no longer an alien phenomenon for women to own and run businesses. Globally, women entrepreneurship has been a hot topic over the past few years. The aim of this platform is to encourage gender equality, a societal issue and talk about certain female-centric issues by exchanging views from some leading Seychellois women who overcame barriers in order to realise their dreams.

The panellists comprised Veronique Laporte, Ingrid Sinon, Ina Laporte, Shella Mohideen and Iouanna Pillay. The discussion was moderated by Peter Roselie.

The debate touched on topics such as women entrepreneur traits, barriers to women entrepreneurs and the power of networking. The panellists emphasised on the importance of having a long-term vision and being passionate, honest and acting ethically regardless of what happens.

The views on how to maintain balance between business and personal life; opportunities for women entrepreneurs and the extent to which women being are becoming innovative were stressed on. Many tips were discussed that would help ‘futurepreneurs’ as well as, ‘mompreneurs’ in order to become more successful within their entrepreneurial venture.

The session also recapped on the message of President Wavel Ramkalawan whereby he mentioned how our civil service has to treat their work place as their own business - ‘Intrapreneurship’.

The discussion, which ended on a happy and positive note, will be aired today at 7.10pm on SBC 1.

This event is another activity being held to commemorate the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2020 in Seychelles; many more activities will be visible throughout the week.

The Global Entrepreneurship Week is the heartbeat of the Global Entrepreneurship Network – a weeklong celebration of the innovators and job creators, who launch start-ups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare. It is organised every November in order to inspire people everywhere through local, national and global activities, from large-scale competitions and events to intimate networking gatherings.

Kindly visit the official GEW Seychelles website – genglobal.org/Seychelles, the department’s Facebook and Instagram pages to keep up with the latest GEW events and updates may also be accessed by using the hashtags #GEW2020 #GEWSeychelles.
