EASF sends 10-strong team to observe October 22-24 general elections

The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) has deployed a team of 10 observers as part of the International election observer mission to the Republic of Seychelles. The observers arrived in Seychelles yesterday.

This is in line with the Decision of the 27th Ordinary Policy Organs Meeting of Ministers of Defence and Security that urged the secretariat to support member states in the electoral processes in collaboration with the African Union and other regional economic communities.

Following the invitation by the Seychelles government, the EASF initiated an integrated mission planning process (IMPP) which took place in Nairobi, Kenya between September 21-25, 2020 to plan for this election observer mission with the support of the Electoral Commission of Seychelles, the department of Foreign Affairs and the Public Health Authority.

Given the public heath requirement, all observers will serve 14 days’ quarantine period at the Berjaya, quarantine facility with strict adherence to the public health protocol.

The international election observer mission will comprise observers from Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Burundi, Sudan and Uganda. The head of Mission is Dawit Assefa. The EASF mission secretariat is already operational under the responsibility of the EASF information manager Jules Hoareau.

The AU charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance is the main framework guiding this election observer mission.

The EASF election observer mission is planning to meet all presidential candidates, members of the civil society and other relevant stakeholders.

The core mandate of the mission is to support the democratic process of the country with a clear message of peace, mutual respect and tolerance to its citizens.
