Chevening scholarship: Developing your potential for the benefit of the community

Jemmy Bouzin

Do you have leadership qualities? A strong academic background? Wish to pursue your Masters and want to change your life? Applications for the 2021/2022 Chevening Scholarship is now open! Meanwhile, we’ll be sharing stories from past Cheveners who took the leap, applied for the scholarship and broadened their horizons. Our Chevener for this week in this series of inspiring stories is Jemmy Bouzin.

“In July 2010, I was honoured to receive the prestigious Chevening Scholarship to pursue a Master’s in forensic science. From a humble background, I knew from early on that education is the key to a better future. Raised between Anse Aux Pins and Mont Fleuri, meant I had to attend Anse Aux Pins and Plaisance primary schools, Pointe Larue and Mont Fleuri secondary schools. Despite having to settle at various schools, I always had a passion for science. It was not surprising that after ‘A’ Level studies, I chose to pursue a degree in forensic science and analytical chemistry at Curtin University, Australia, and subsequently joined the Seychelles Police forensic section, aligning my passion with the quest for the truth in the interest of justice.

“After two years of industry experience and recognising the gap in integrating the advancement of science and technology in solving crime, I focused on attaining a Master’s degree in forensic science at the University of Strathclyde. The course was ideal and unique, being the longest forensic science degree programme in the UK with a pedigree in teaching, research and casework. Inspired by the desire to make a difference in my organisation, I applied for the Chevening Scholarship.

“Being a Chevening recipient and studying at the University of Strathclyde was a great honour and a wonderful opportunity for me to join a global network of forensic scientists. Scientists who are research leaders in their field with access to the latest development in forensic science. This has enabled me to contribute positively to my organisation and take responsibility as head of the forensic section.

“The Master's programme has also propelled me to new heights in my professional development. Currently, I am pursuing a Ph.D. at Curtin University, Australia, where my research focuses on improving methods for latent fingermark enhancement, for jurisdictions with limited resources and tropical climates, fulfilling my drive to use science and technology to solve crime.

“The Chevening Scholarship is much more than obtaining an academic credential or industry skills, it is an opportunity to explore your passion, experience a different culture, meet amazing people, and grow in all areas of life. My time in the UK was memorable in the company of many football fan friends, myself being a fervent supporter of Manchester United. Experiencing the atmosphere of a premier league and champions league matches, and watching Ranger vs Celtic matches from the comfort of pubs are treasured moments. Altogether, this life-changing opportunity has been a powerful motivator in harnessing my potential to contribute positively to the community and in my commitment to support others to realise their dreams.

“My advice to future Cheveners is to know, share, and live your passion and dreams. Take positive steps towards what you want to achieve in life. Although the process might not be easy, your belief in your goal will summon your strength to persevere and succeed, while the journey will provide you with personal growth and lasting relationship.”
