International Day of Democracy |17 September 2020

CDWS sends message of peace and unity

The following is a message from the Citizen Democracy Watch Seychelles (CDWS) on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy celebrated on September 15:

“The International Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in our beloved Seychelles. Democracy is as much a process as a goal, and only with the full participation of and support by the international community, national governing bodies, civil society and individuals, can the ideal of democracy be made into a reality to be enjoyed by all.

“The values of freedom, respect for human rights and the principle of holding periodic and genuine elections by universal suffrage are essential elements of democracy.  In turn, democracy provides the natural environment for the protection and effective realisation of human rights.

“As a leading civil society organization, Citizen Democracy Watch Seychelles (CDWS) seeks to promote the aspirations of all people, especially young men and women, to strive for the realisation of shared universal values, such as tolerance, pluralism, the respect of human rights, freedom and dialogue.

“At each of the key moments that have marked our contemporary history, human rights has supported the peaceful development of societies by contributing to the construction, consolidation of our democracy, and the development of democratic institutions, especially in times of uncertainties.

“Let us therefore be grateful for the small precious gifts that life gives us. We have always been together, united to face all the adversities heading our way. We have always helped each other, despite our differences and we have chosen to raise the flag of our nation because Seychelles is ours.

“Be thankful for the chances to experience yet another September 15, in peace and unity.

“Happy International Day of Democracy.”                                             .
