Agriculture minister makes first visit to La Digue for 2020

Fisheries & agriculture minister Charles Bastienne on Thursday this week made his first visit to La Digue for this year.

He visited some of the main farmers as well as l’Union Estate farm, which is the biggest producer of crops and livestock on La Digue.

In general, the minister has expressed satisfaction with the level of production on this island, despite some of the challenges, difficulties and threats which have affected almost the entire farming community nationally in recent months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The farmers were also pleased with the visit of the minister and they seized the opportunity to voice out some of their main concerns like the hot weather which are hindering their productivity, particularly the production of tomatoes, lack of input earlier during the year among others.

Minister Bastienne feels that it is also utterly important to show support to the farming community on this inner island and the visit has allowed him and his team to see how to further support the farmers on La Digue so as to also boost their production to ensure national food security.

Ministerial visits on farms are mostly conducted on a regular basis to better understand the constraints of the farming community in the country and to find solutions to their problems.

The accompanying photographs show some highlights of Minister Bastienne’s visit on La Digue.
