Three men sentenced for drug related offences |13 August 2020

Three men were sentenced by the Supreme Court last Friday in three separate cases, after they all pleaded guilty to drug related offences.

Shariff Lebon, a 24-year-old male technician of Les Mamelles, was sentenced for the offence of trafficking in a controlled drug. He is to serve one-year imprisonment, suspended for two years and a fine of R15,000 payable within a six-month period. If he fails to make the payment or if during the period of his suspended sentence he commits any similar offence, the sentence will be activated. Lebon was arrested in his resident district on December 19, 2018 by officers of the Anti-Narcotics Bureau (ANB) within the Seychelles Police Force in possession of 73.95 grammes of herbal cannabis.

Jude Athanase, a 42-year-old fisherman of Marie-Jeanne Estate on Praslin, received a similar sentence to that of the first convict, but with a fine of R12,000. Athanase was arrested at his home on July 30, 2018 by ANB officers, in possession of 61.8 grammes of herbal cannabis.

Jean-Luc Marie, a 39-year-old male rehabilitation client of Apdar residing at Port Glaud, received a six-month prison sentence suspended for two years and a fine of R10,000 to be paid by instalments of R2500 per month. He pleaded guilty to the alternative charge with the offence of possession of4.01 grammes of heroin. Marie was arrested in possession of the drug in his resident district on November 14, 2016 by officers of the then National Drugs Enforcement Agency (NDEA).
