President Faure sends message of solidarity to Mauritius |12 August 2020
To show solidarity towards the government and people of Mauritius, President Danny Faure sent a message of support to H.E Mr Pravind Jugnauth, Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius after hearing of the oil spill off the coast of Mauritius.
In his message, President Faure expressed: “It was with immense shock that I learnt of the spill of more than 1,000 tonnes of fuel in the Mauritian waters causing widespread damage to your coastal ecosystem, home to thousands of rare and endemic species.
This tragedy comes at a time of great challenges to the region that is still coming to terms with the ‘new normal’ due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During these trying times, our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters in Mauritius, in particular the authorities and emergency personnel assisting in the containment of the oil spill.”
The President further praised the efforts of the Mauritian government for the way it is managing this crisis and also paid tribute to the resilience of the Mauritian people in the face of this catastrophe.
“This incident is a reminder of how fragile our ecosystem is and how dependent we are on the oceans for our livelihood.”
“The government and people of Seychelles join me in extending our solidarity to the government and people of Mauritius. I am confident that under your leadership and guidance Mauritius will emerge stronger and more united from this difficult period,” concluded President Faure in his message.
