Inner islands youth battled to join the Seychelles National Youth Council’s ‘Word Splash’ final in a preliminary round held on Praslin last week.

‘Word Splash,’ a word spelling competition, is being organised for the first time as part of the Youth Festival 2020 activities.

Participants from both Praslin and La Digue participated in the primary, secondary and open categories.

Josette Constance, young citizens coordinator, explained: “This competition is meant to instill confidence in the youth as well as develop their vocabulary and encourage reading. Today we will especially start with the open category as this is the first such competition and we would like to give the primary and secondary students an ‘avant gout’, so that they will be at ease to take the stage when they are called up.”

The competition was very intense for the primary category where both Ella Rose (La Digue school) and Rohan Bristol (Grand Anse school) excelled. Annaelle D’Unienville (Praslin secondary) won the secondary category while Nathanielle Crispin (Grand Anse Praslin) and Jean Marc Athanase (Baie Ste Anne Praslin) were winners of the open category.

The organisers expressed their satisfaction with the turnout and level of the competition.

The winners have qualified for the grand final which is to be held on August 21 on Mahé and is scheduled to be broadcast on SBC and Telesesel.
