Public Service Day 2019 - The door-to-door programme

As part of its mandate to facilitate employment for the most vulnerable groups of society and with the aim of improving their quality of life through securing permanent employment, the government has, since January 2018, re-introduced the Unemployment Relief Scheme (URS). The scheme is to assist the vulnerable groups to gain ownership of their lives through decent work, remove dependents on welfare assistance and at increasing labour supply for the labour market all with the aim of sustaining a low unemployment rate.

It was in this vein that the ministry launched its door-to-door campaign in 2018 to consolidate the Unemployment Relief Scheme (URS) and other programmes within the ministry. The aim of the outreach campaign is to identify and register people in the community who are unemployed, with the intention of getting them into employment. This in return will help those clients secure employment, which in itself, secures an income for the family. The campaign also brings visibility to other programmes that exist within the ministry. Throughout the outreach programmes the ministry has been able to place a total of 133 jobseekers out of the 397 registered from the eight districts covered, namely, Roche Caiman, Les Mamelles, Mont Fleuri, Plaisance and Perseverance, Grand Anse Praslin, Anse Aux Pins and Anse Royale. An additional four districts have been earmarked for this year where the ministry will conduct the door-to-door and these are Pointe Larue, Mont Buxton, St Louis and Cascade.

Through the door-to-door exercise the ministry has been able to change the livelihood of families that were in desperate need. The ministry urges the jobseekers to make use of all the services available in order to have a positive and prosperous livelihood through decent work.
