Arid condemns brutal attack on migrant worker |09 June 2020

“The Association for Rights Information and Democracy (Arid) is publicly condemning the brutal attack on the Bangladeshi worker. The ‘International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families’ article 17, states 'Migrant workers and members of their families who are deprived of their liberty shall be treated with humanity and with respect for the inherent dignity of the human person' and the Convention also protects migrant workers from any form of abuse and violence.

“The brutal attack on the foreign worker is a severe violation of international convention on the protection of the rights of all migrant workers and their families, to which Seychelles is a party. Human rights are not only for citizens, they are for everyone who is on a state’s territory or within its jurisdiction, without discrimination, whatever their position, conditions and status.

“Violence perpetrated against migrant workers is not accepted and should not be tolerated.

“Arid is calling on the police to take this matter seriously. We strongly denounce any act of violence and human rights abuse.

“As human rights advocates, Arid is deeply concerned not only for the citizens but for everyone including migrant workers. This ruthless incident can impact negatively and grind down on the social cohesion of our country.”
