11 men under investigation into suspected poaching incident |12 May 2020

Eleven men aged between 25 – 58 are being investigated for unlawful possession of sea turtle and seabird meat.

The men come from Les Mamelles, Perseverance, Pointe Larue, Beau Vallon, La Louise, La Misere, Roche Bois, Cascade and Au Cap.

This follows an incident on Friday May 9 when the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate change in collaboration with the Seychelles Coastguard and Seychelles Police intercepted a vessel suspected to be involved in sea turtle and sea bird poaching.

The vessel was intercepted by the Seychelles Coastguard between Silhouette and Mahé.

The men were detained and released on bail on Saturday afternoon.

The Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change continues with its investigation in collaboration with the Seychelles Police.       

All sea turtles and some sea bird species are protected under the Wild Animals and Birds Protection Act of 1961.
