ANB agent in custody pending investigation for ‘conspiracy to commit felony’ |28 April 2020
The Seychelles Police Force has announced that an agent of the Anti-Narcotics Bureau (ANB), along with a family member, is under investigation following a recent complaint linking them to various offences, leading to the charge of ‘conspiracy to commit felony’.
Both suspects from Glacis appeared before the court last Thursday and were remanded for fourteen days on various charges, including impersonation.
According to the police, the arrests are in no way connected to the fatal accident which occurred at Carana last week.
As for the shot fired at Pointe Au Sel on Saturday afternoon, Inspector Janet Georges of the Crime Investigation Division (CID) clarified that the police received a call from ANB officers at around 3.10pm, reporting the fired warning shot.
Officers from the Anse Royale police station were deployed to the scene where they met Inspector Georges, the duty officer for the day.
According to ANB officers, they were conducting routine patrols through Pointe Au Sel to Anse Royale and encountered a white car travelling in the opposite direction. Upon spotting the vehicle in which the ANB officers were travelling, the driver tried to reverse but was unable to do so, as the road was congested. The driver then turned again, leading the officers to block the road with the intention of questioning the driver as to why he was acting suspiciously. The driver was however able to ram past the vehicles in which the officers were travelling, forcing his car past a wall and gutter.
In doing so, an ANB officer was hit and injured on the left elbow, and damage was caused to one of the two vehicles on scene.
It was at that point that the officer fired a warning shot but the driver managed to flee the scene, before reporting himself to the Anse Aux Pins police station later.
He is in police custody as investigations are ongoing.
Regarding the fatal accident last Tuesday morning at Carana where three people lost their lives, the Seychelles Police Force has confirmed that up till now, all the evidence indicate that there was no foul play involved.
Regarding the presence of ANB officers at the scene of the accident, Superintendent James Tirant, who is the commander for the North region, has confirmed that there were two agents from the bureau present.
He however noted that they were only there to assist the officers and other services already on the scene after they noticed the incident during their routine patrol.
As for investigations in the incident, forensic expert Assistant Superintendent Aubrey Quatre said they are still carrying out analysis on the vehicle and other personal items found at the crash scene.
Also present during the press conference were Assistant Superintendent Jean Toussaint, public relations manager, and Assistant Superintendent Antoine Desnousse, head of traffic department.
