English River Health Centre gets playroom

Hon. Herminie made a donation of toys to the new playroom

A new playroom has been inaugurated at the English River Health Center and it is a donation of the Rotary Club.

The key to this room was handed over to the chief executive of the Health Care Agency, Dr Danny Louange by the president of Rotary Club, Sunil Dhanjee.

Health Minister Jean-Paul Adam and Ambassador Erna H. Athanasius witnessed the opening of the first ever playroom in a hospital last week.

“We are happy that nurse manager May Malcouzane came over to us and proposed to have this playroom at the health centre. We are part of a community-based organisation and we find the needs of the community through motivated people in the community. We hope that the children who will come at the clinic will be relieved from stress of seeing a doctor. The Green Island Foundation also helped us putting the playroom together,” said M. Dhanjee.

Dr Louange said it is always a pleasure to come together for a special project. “It is indeed encouraging to see the private community contributing to the health of the community. This project is very rewarding for us as it will cater for over 3,000 children in this region. These facilities have been designed to bring a friendlier environment for the children who come to this health care facility. When children come to the hospital, they have great anxiety and when we look at the new playroom, we are sure they will be relieved. Rotary Club does not only contribute towards these kinds of projects but also sponsors trainings and assistance towards other projects in the health care system. I salute them for this,” said Dr Louange.

Minister Adam stated that this new playroom is a symbol of “health in all its aspects”. “With this new facility, when a parent comes to the clinic, the child will be more at ease. It means we are having a complete vision of the health care. We appreciate a lot the coming on board of the Rotary Club for this project as this is a project that was initiated directly by the staff of the clinic. There are many families coming to this clinic and also the early childhood development centre is based here, and the staff found it important to have some entertainment for the children,” said Minister Adam.

The minister also stressed on the importance of making the health centres more independent.

“We are encouraging the clinics to work with the business community to improve their facilities. We are looking into making them independent and have a better management of their budget. We will be investing in solar panels in this clinic; therefore with the money saved they will be able to invest in more outreach programmes for the community,” he added.

Member of the National Assembly for the English River district, Wilbert Herminie, also made a donation of toys towards the new playroom on behalf of the Fabco’s company. The playroom was also blessed by Father Alcindor and the children from Bel Eau crèche performed a ‘Thank you’ song to conclude the ceremony before having a firsthand experience in the playroom with other children.
