Eighteen families registered under the housing scheme in the Anse Boileau district received the keys to their new apartments in a handover ceremony yesterday afternoon.

The ‘Vilaz Lafous’ housing estate was inaugurated by President Danny Faure and Pamela Charlette, Minister for Habitat, Lands, Infrastructure and Land Transport, in the presence of Mitcy Larue, Minister for Family Affairs; and other high-level dignitaries.

Because of the limited space, only 18 units were built, which include six two-bedroom and 12 three-bedroom units.

Residents benefiting with a unit at the estate are those who were on the prioritised list under the housing point system.

The successful contractor of the project was SAIFU Enterprise Company and it started the project in 2017. The completion of the estate encountered many delays due to the approval of electrical substations and delays in finalising the sewage treatment plant.

In her opening remarks, Minister Charlette stated that during the course of 2019, the Ministry of Habitat, Lands, Infrastructure and Land Transport allocated 306 units to first-time homeowners under the social housing assistance. Furthermore, a series of allocations will be held during the course of 2020 under the 24 housing projects in 24 districts.

The minister also called on all the applicants to do their part and pay their contributions.

Marie-Alise Dodin, a resident of the housing estate, also echoed the message of the minister by encouraging others to contribute to the schemes and be patient.

The highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of the plaque for the new estate, followed by a tour where President Faure was able to visit one of the apartments.

Prior to the opening, a meeting was held with the families to provide them with information about their obligations. This was followed by the signing of agreements.
